Types of Sealing Ring

Viton™ O-rings

Also known as FKM O-rings, Viton™ O-rings are made from fluorocarbons and boast resistance to temperatures from -40°C up to 250°C, low gas permeability, superb mechanical characteristics and a low compression set. They are highly suitable for use with acids, halogenated hydrocarbons, petroleum and silicone fluids or gases. However, they should not be used in conjunction with amines, esters, ethers with a low molecular weight, hot hydrofluoric acids or Skydrol. Their incredible versatility makes them popular in a wide range of industries, including the automotive sector, aviation, chemical processing and mechanical engineering plants.

FEP O-rings

FEP O-rings pair a silicone or fluorocarbon core with a coating of fluorinated ethylene propylene (FEP), which offers users several distinct advantages over a standard PTFE O-ring. Firstly, they are capable of handling temperatures of between -60°C and 260°C for silicone cores and -20°C and 204°C for fluorocarbon cores. Secondly, they also provide superb elasticity and low friction levels in comparison to their PTFE counterparts. Although they are best suited to static applications, they can also be adaptable to dynamic ones where the movement is slow and short. This makes them popular in the chemical, food, petrochemical and pharmaceutical industries.

PFA O-rings

O-rings which are encapsulated with perfluoroalkoxy (PFA) are an attractive alternative to PTFE or FEP O-rings which offer several advantages over their competitors. In comparison to PTFE, PFA O-rings are a more cost-effective option, while the substance has greater resistance when dealing with temperatures of above 250°C than FEP does. Similarly, it is also better equipped to keep a variety of chemicals from permeating its seal, making it ideal for use within the chemical and petrochemical industries, the food sector and with pharmaceutical organisations.

USP Class VI O-rings

In this context, USP stands for United States Pharmacopeia and the rubber compounds which have achieved a Class VI certification definitely offer a unique selling point, too. All of the elastomers which receive this accreditation are subjected to rigorous testing procedures, which assess their consistency, purity, quality and strength to ensure they are safe for use in situations where human life is at stake. As such, USP Class VI O-rings are in high demand among the medical and pharmaceutical industries.

Silicone
This elastomer is ideal for weather and ozone resistance. It offers limited oil resistance and is not recommended for dynamic sealing applications due to poor tensile and tear strength and low abrasion resistance. Temperature range -80° - +450°F.

Highly Saturated Nitrile
This material offers better resistance to high temperature, superior physical properties, and improved chemical resistance over traditional nitrile compounds. It has improved resistance to ozone and sunlight and excellent resistance to compression set. Temperature range -40°- +325°F.

Ethylene Propylene (EPM, EPDM) (EPR)
Excellent resistance to Skydrol® fluids used in commercial aircraft hydraulic systems. Recommended for hot water, steam, and phosphate ester-type hydraulic fluids. Resistance to some acids, alkalies, and ozone. Not recommended for petroleum fluids or diester lubricants. Temperature range: 65° - +300°F.

PTFE
This is a white thermoplastic fluoroethylene resin that offers heat resistance, low friction, dielectric strength, weatherability, toughness, no water absorption, and flexibility. Temperature range: -65°- +500°F.

How to Choose Sealing Ring

Temperatures
The temperature the sealing ring will be exposed to is an important consideration when choosing the proper sealing ring for your application. Temperatures can adversely affect the performance of even the best-made sealing ring. If the operating temperature is too cold, the sealing ring will lose its elasticity and become more brittle, making breakage likely. On the other end of the spectrum, if an sealing ring gets too hot, it can become too flexible, and degradation will occur. The importance of temperature is why you'll always see temperature ranges on our products. The ability to see the temperature ranges will help you determine if the material is best suited to your specific application.

Operating pressure
Operating pressure is also an important consideration when you are purchasing sealing ring. Typically, in a static sealing setting, a standard 70 shore hardness will usually work well. Yet, once pressure approaches the 1500+ psi range, you may need to consider a shore hardness of 80-90.

Surface finish
Surface finish is also an important consideration. Generally speaking, the ideal surface finish for dynamic surfaces is 5 to 16 µ inch rms. Smoother and rougher surfaces can result in increased friction and reduced life of the seal. Rougher finishes up to 64 µ inch rms can be used in static applications.

Stretch
When purchasing sealing ring, you'll also want to consider the stretch of the ring. For effective sealing, the inside diameter (id) of the sealing ring must be smaller than the groove where it will sit. This groove will require a slight stretch in the sealing ring when it is in place, fitting snuggling into the groove. The stretch should be between 1-5%, with 2% being ideal in most applications.

Apg is your sealing ring resource
As you can see, a lot goes into choosing the correct sealing ring for your specific application! Apg offers a great selection of standard sealing ring, and we can offer vulcanized options if you need something other than standard sizes.

Process of Sealing Ring

Extrusion

Many sealing ring can be made extrusion, a manufacturing process in which raw material is forced through a die or series of dies. There are different forms of extrusion, including hot extrusion, cold extrusion, friction extrusion, and microextrusion. When the material passes through the die (or dies), it ultimately takes on the shape of the die. Some types of extrusion manufacturing processes use a hopper. Raw material is fed into a hopper and heated. Once the material is heated, it is forced through a die or series of dies. Sealing ring are heated and passed through a ring-shaped die.

Pressure molding

Another effective manufacturing process used to produce sealing ring is pressure molding. Also referred to a “compression molding,” Pressure molding uses heat and pressure to create a three-dimensional sealing ring. The sealing ring pressure molding manufacturing process begins by injecting preheated material into a mold cavity. This is often rubber, but can be other materials. Once the material is injected into the mold cavity, a fitted plug is used to close the cavity. The pressure is increased in the mold which allows the material to take shape.

Transfer molding

Sealing ring can also be made using transfer molding, which is substantially similar to pressure molding. The manufacturing process of transfer molding involves placing preheated material into a mold cavity. Unlike pressure molding, transfer molding requires a closed mold cavity, not an open mold. Because transfer molding uses a closed mold cavity, the molding is able to create higher pressure. This makes the finished product thicker and often provides more consistent results.

Injection molding

Injection molding is an effective manufacturing process that can be used to create sealing ring. The process involves injecting raw material into a mold cavity, usually in the form of pellets. The pellets are then heated and become liquified, making them easily moldable once in the mold cavity.

How to Maintain Sealing Ring

Do use compressed air or a soft brush
Frequently cleaning the rings is a vital part of maintenance. This is especially important for O-rings that provide a seal to machines. If you find any debris, grit, or contamination, you should clean it using a soft brush to avoid abrasions.Additionally, if there are any signs of corrosion or cracks on the ring, you must look for a replacement as using a broken O-ring can lead to major defects.

Do lubricate regularly
Sealing Ring need substantial lubrication to function correctly. If not, cracks can occur and ultimately cause severe damage. This is especially significant for machines that require seals to be opened and closed. For this instance, you can use any silicone-based Sealing Ring lubricant like WEICON Silicone Grease and apply the necessary amount.

Do be familiar with other maintenance products
Remember, there are various kinds of Sealing Ring made for different purposes. They can be Neoprene, Viton, or NBR-based rings. What you need will determine the type of Sealing Ring you should buy. Simplex offers Sealing Ring made from various materials such as silicone, Viton, and nitrile rubber.Additionally, you may need products like adhesives and sealants while maintaining your Sealing Ring. Sealants block fluids between spaces, while adhesives bind two parts together.

Do store it properly
Knowing how to store Sealing Ring is just as important as applying them. You should keep them in an airtight bag, away from sunlight. Using old Sealing Ring can lead to severe consequences, so it is always better to be safe.Additionally, the rings could get brittle over time. If that happens, it is best to check out suppliers like Simplex for new ones.

Don't stretch out the O‑ring
It is crucial to apply Sealing Ring carefully, as improper care can result in significant damage. Stretching the Sealing Ring can cause detrimental effects such as abrasions, degradation, and flattening. These Sealing Ring failures can lead to costly repairs, as they can also damage other components that you may need to replace. You must understand the application of your Sealing Ring, as well. We likewise recommend that you do some evaluation before buying a specific product to save you from wasted purchases and ensure that you are correctly applying the Sealing Ring.

Don't use tools with sharp edges
You should avoid using tools with pointy tips or sharp edges while working with Sealing Ring. Sharp tools can easily damage the Sealing Ring and affect its sealing capability. These tools must be handled with care and, depending on the application, can cause severe issues. If you need to remove and install O-rings, remember to slide, not roll. Use your fingers to slowly squeeze it sideways until you can push one edge out from its recess. Continue doing so carefully until you have removed the O-ring. Once you are done, clean the Sealing Ring and the area around it. Discard any debris or grease and check for cracks or corrosion.

FAQ

Q: What is the purpose of the sealing ring?

A: The function of O rings is to seal a joining of two pieces to ensure that no air, gas or liquid can pass. Typically, they are fitted into a groove and designed to resist pressure. The resistance is what prevents air or liquid from escaping or entering the joining.Signet rings go by many names, including “seal rings” because of their function to seal letters, as well as a “gentleman's ring” because it was often worn by the male heirs in the family. In modern times, both men and women wear signet rings.

Q: What is O-ring sealing?

A: The O ring is a seal that is ring-shaped with a round cross-section, like a donut. They are basically rubber rings used as seals. O-rings are among the most widely used seals in machinery and equipment, as they are cheap, easy to produce, reliable and easy to fit. What do signet rings mean if you're female? The meaning of signet rings has changed since they were used by men to seal and sign documents. Now, signet rings are often given to either males or females to mark an individual's “coming of age”. They have come to symbolise the transition from childhood to adulthood.

Q: Why is sealing necessary?

A: With the right method, sealing not only ensures product safety and quality — it also has the potential to improve presentation and usability, resulting in a more appealing brand. On the flip side, inadequate seals can translate into poor product quality that could result in both financial and brand damage.Terminology note: Any o-ring can technically be called a gasket since they prevent the transfer of liquid and air, but while o-rings are a specific shape of gasket, any gasket cannot be called an o-ring.

Q: What is seal ring and mating ring?

A: Theory of operation A mechanical face seal consists of two parts — one that rotates and one that is stationary. The mating ring is the rotating member, mounted on the shafts, while the stationary seal assembly is installed into the housing bore.Ease of service, no smearing or retightening. No critical torque on tightening, therefore unlikely to cause structural damage. O-rings normally require very little room and are light in weight. In many cases an O-ring can be reused, an advantage over non-elastic flat seals and crush-type gaskets.

Q: What is the difference between sealing ring and O-ring?

A: One key difference between these two sealing components is their application range; oil seals have higher pressure resistance compared to O rings which make them ideal for high-pressure environments like engine parts while O-rings work well for lower-pressure assemblies like valves and pipes.

Q: How do you maintain rubber O-rings?

A: O Ring Maintenance Tips | Specialist Sealing Products
However, all o rings should be cleaned using warm water and dried using a clean, lint-free towel. Silicone grease is the best lubricant for these o rings; however, use in moderation!Pure silicone oil helps resolve many of the unknowns in the rubbery domains. It helps prevent mishandling of O-rings or other gaskets, and helps avoid their failure.

Q: Is an O-ring a gasket?

A: By definition, an O-ring is technically a gasket, but not all gaskets are O-rings. O-rings are made exclusively of an elastomer material, resulting in an elastic texture that's able to stretch and revert back to its natural shape and size without breaking. Gaskets, on the other hand, can be made of any material. An O-ring is a round elastomeric ring. O-rings are ideally suited to be a compressed, static seal between non moving parts. O-rings can be used as a face seal on a valve, and used on rotating shafts.

Q: What is seal ring made of?

A: Nitrile (Buna), Neoprene, Ethylene Propylene (EPDM Rubber), Silicone, Fluorocarbon (Viton), and PTFE (Teflon) are among the most commonly used compounds for O-rings and seals.Piston rings are used in cylinders for fluid sealing. They seal against the cylinder bore to prevent fluid from flowing across the cylinder head.

Q: What is the difference between seal and sealing?

A: Seals and sealings were two different forms of imprints. Both of them refer to the same object. Sealings were the instruments used to make seals that were essentially imprints. Seals were the instruments used to make sealings that were essentially imprints.

Q: What is sealing technology?

A: A device or material that is used to close off or fasten an opening or connection, especially to prevent the escape of a liquid or gas. In other words, a seal is a mechanical component used for keeping the fluid A and the fluid B apart. Figure 1. A sealing component keeps fluid A and fluid B separated. An O-ring prevents leaks by creating a durable, moisture-resistant seal that locks pressurized gas and water inside a system. O-rings seal by being compressed between two joined fittings, preventing any air or outside moisture from entering the closed system.

Q: What are the two purposes of a seal?

A: Although the O-ring was originally so named because of its circular cross section, there are now variations in cross-section design. The shape can have different profiles, such as an x-shaped profile, commonly called the X-ring, Q-ring, or by the trademarked name Quad Ring.Sealing devices serve the following functions: Prevent leakage of sealed lubricant from inside. Prevent entry of dust and foreign matter (dirt, water, metal powder, etc.) from outside.

Q: Why is my O-ring not sealing properly?

A: Contributing Factors: Incorrect groove or gland design. Improper o-ring sizing. Hardware damage or misalignment. Suggested Solutions: Underperforming O-Ring seals can typically be improved by optimizing the O-Ring size or gland design for the specific application conditions. Not only will lubrication help the seal last longer, but it will also prevent breakdowns of machinery, motors, engines, or other devices the seal is meant to protect should it fail. Applying oil or grease will protect the O-ring from damage when used.

Q: Can O-rings be flat?

A: Because they have corners, flat O-rings can be used in addition to round O-rings to seal off spaces where the former cannot. For instance, as flat O-rings have a bigger surface area and offer better coverage when screwed, they can be employed as a seal between an automobile's oil filter and oil housing.Dynamic seals are the type of seals used to produce a barrier between stationary or moving surfaces in linear, oscillating, and rotary motion applications. These seals are used to separate or retain fluids, pressure, and remove contaminants.

Q: Why are O-rings made of rubber?

A: While O rings can be made of many different elastomers, some are widely used in a variety of applications. Nitrile Butadiene Rubber: Also known as NBR, this synthetic rubber copolymer provides superior resistance to chemicals, oils, and acids. It is puncture-resistant and functions at extremely low temperatures. The addition of a lubricant can extend the operating life of the O-ring by creating a barrier film over its surface. This barrier film can also help reduce leakage by filling the asperities between the metal surface and the O-ring seal.

Q: Why do people use O-rings?

A: The main purpose of O-rings is to prevent fluid or air from escaping as it acts as a sealing device. When the ring is squeezed between two surfaces, it takes up the clearance and then prevents any fluid or air from being released.O rings are used to block a path which may otherwise allow a liquid or a gas to escape. The o ring is placed into a groove to secure them in place, and then compressed between two surfaces.

Q: What should slip ring seals be installed with?

A: Use Teflon pipe tape or pipe sealant on NPT threads. As a guideline, NPT threads should be hand tight plus 1- 3 turns to seal the threads. When installing parallel threads, appropriate gaskets or o-rings should be used.Gaskets seal a connection between two components or flanges that have flat surfaces, while seals are used between engine parts, pumps, and shafts that rotate. Gaskets are used wherever a union or flange is required to prevent leaking. Gaskets are most commonly used as static seals.

Q: How is an O-ring and back up ring installed in a component?

A: It will withstand heat and presmust be smaller than the piston groove diameter, so that the O-ring is slightly stretched, fitting snugly in the groove. This stretch should be between 1%-5% with 2% as the ideal in most applications.sure to prevent leaks from occurring. Backup O-rings are placed behind the main O-ring. Each backup O-ring is used in conjunction with a separate main O-ring. The main O-ring is located directly around the mating surface of two parts.

Q: Should I use a gasket or an O-ring?

A: When you start the actual installation make sure that the oil seal is always facing the right direction. So, not facing outwards, but always with the spring facing the side of the medium to be sealed. The oil seal must then be pressed into the bore.O-Rings are the best choice for high-pressure applications as they can withstand extreme amounts without failure. While both sealing devices can function in a wide range of temperatures, gaskets are better suited for extreme temperature environments.

Q: What is a PTFE O-ring?

A: Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) O-rings: Temperature & Chemical Resistant PTFE is a popular O-Ring material which is White in color. The PTFE O-Rings for use in applications which require a chemically resistant and non-compressible material. PTFE is the chemically inert of the O-ring materials.

Q: Can an O-ring replace a gasket?

A: If you need to replace a seal, it is critical to know if you need a gasket or an O ring. While both are seals, they are very different. Yes, they both keep liquids or gasses from exiting or entering a joining in a piece of machinery. But the two seals have significant differences and cannot be used interchangeably.Because they have corners, flat O-rings can be used in addition to round O-rings to seal off spaces where the former cannot. For instance, as flat O-rings have a bigger surface area and offer better coverage when screwed, they can be employed as a seal between an automobile's oil filter and oil housing.
